Advanced heart failure clinic

The Advanced Heart Failure Clinic at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center is designed to comprehensively treat and manage patients who suffer from congestive heart failure. Our physicians specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and management of this cardiac disorder.

The clinic is a collaboration between an interdisciplinary team of physicians who provide care for heart failure patients while hospitalized. The goal of the Advanced Heart Failure Clinic is to improve patient outcomes and reduce hospital readmission.

Contact our clinic if you experience the following symptoms, as they may be signs of heart failure:

  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Difficulty breathing when lying down, or needing to sleep sitting in a chair or with extra pillows
  • Dizziness or falling
  • Feelings of confusion or feeling that you cannot think clearly
  • Feeling overly tired or like you have no energy
  • Shortness of breath that does not get better with rest
  • Swelling of your feet, ankles, legs or stomach
  • Weight gain of 2-3 pounds overnight or 5 pounds in one week

Preventive heart care

Heart disease is sometimes referred to as a “silent killer.” This is because it can take years for patients to actually experience symptoms of heart disease. Because of this, our doctors emphasize the importance of preventive heart care. We use advanced computed tomography (CT) exams that can detect heart disease in its earliest and most treatable stages.

Heart conditions we treat

Our cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons treat a wide range of heart conditions, such as:

  • Aortic aneurysm
  • Congenital heart defects
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart arrhythmia
  • Heart failure
  • Heart infection
  • High blood pressure
  • Unstable angina
  • Valvular heart disease

Cardiac treatments and services we offer

We offer specialized cardiac services for patients experiencing a heart condition.

Cardiac rehabilitation services

We offer patients access to cardiac rehabilitation services that are designed to help them recover after a cardiac event. During cardiac rehabilitation, patients will work under the supervision of our expert staff to complete a series of exercises. Throughout the course of treatment, the level of physical activity is gradually increased while the body’s response to exercise is monitored.

The goal of cardiac rehabilitation is to help patients return to normal activities as quickly as possible, while still ensuring the heart is working correctly. Cardiac rehabilitation can last from six to 18 weeks, depending on an individual’s unique situation.

Emergency cardiac care

We offer emergency services to treat life-threatening conditions of the heart—including heart attack. Our emergency care staff is standing by 24/7 to ensure you receive the care you need, when you need it most.

If you think someone is having a heart attack, call 911 immediately.

Minimally invasive heart surgery

Heart surgery is traditionally performed through a large opening in the chest (sternotomy), however, this can lead to long recovery times and increased scarring for patients. When possible, our cardiothoracic surgeons perform minimally invasive heart surgery, which offers much smaller and less invasive incisions to access the heart and coronary arteries. This results are smaller scars, reduced postoperative pain and a faster recovery time.
