Understanding TAVR

TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to replace an aortic valve that is failing and no longer opening properly, known as aortic valve stenosis. The minimally invasive procedure allows doctors to enter through a blood vessel or small incision in the chest.

During the procedure, a catheter is inserted through the access point. Your surgeon will use imaging technology to guide the catheter through your blood vessel and into the aortic valve. The new valve is then inserted through the catheter and secured into place. The catheter is then removed.

TAVR may be an option for people who are at intermediate or high risk of complications from surgical aortic valve replacement (open heart surgery).
