Our goal is to work together as a team, assuring that you receive high-quality care and support throughout the transplant process.

What is a kidney transplant?

Sometimes, an individual may have a kidney that no longer functions properly and cannot be repaired or saved by traditional methods—such as medication or surgery. In these cases, it may be recommended the patient visit a transplant specialist.

A kidney transplant is the process of finding a healthy, functioning kidney from one individual and transplanting (surgically inserting) it into the body of the patient who needs it.

How does the kidney transplant process work?

If your doctor believes you may require a kidney transplant, they will recommend you to our transplant team for an evaluation. The evaluation allows us to determine the severity of your current organ failure and whether or not you are eligible for a transplant.

If you are eligible, you will be placed on a waiting list while we search for a donor that is compatible with your individual criteria.

Types of donors

We offer two main methods of kidney donations to increase the likelihood that you will have timely access to the kidney you need.

Deceased donor transplant

One method of receiving an organ is through a deceased donor transplant. Many of our transplant donations are made by the families of deceased individuals who have identified themselves as organ donors. The donation of a deceased loved one's healthy organs gives recipients the opportunity to continue living long and full lives.

Living donor transplant

When possible, receiving a living donor organ is usually preferable to a deceased donor transplant. This is because living donor organs tend to function longer in the body and may provide better outcomes than deceased donor organs. A living donor transplant also eliminates the need to stay on a waitlist.

Living donor transplants are usually possible with organs such as the kidney, where a patient can offer to donate one of their own organs. Sometimes, partial donations from a living donor are also possible.
