Urgent care
Urgent care provides treatment for minor conditions and illnesses that need immediate attention, but are not cause for an emergency room visit. Urgent care facilities are open beyond the hours of a typical medical practice, providing care during the day, weeknights and on weekends.

Differences between an emergency room (ER) and urgent care clinic
Urgent care clinics typically treat minor injuries and illnesses, like 24-hour "stomach bugs." If you are unable to see your primary care doctor for a condition that is not life-threatening, then you should consider visiting an urgent care clinic. If your health concern needs additional treatment, the urgent care center can refer you to specialty doctors.
To help you make the best decision for your medical situation, we've provided some general guidelines.
You should visit an ER if you have:
- Any life-threatening medical emergency
- A suspected heart attack
- A suspected cerebrovascular accident (stroke)
- Blood in stool
- Broken bones
- Coughing or throwing up blood
- Deep wounds with heavy bleeding
- Dehydration
- Head injuries (e.g., concussions)
- High fever
- Trouble breathing
- Severe allergic reactions
- Severe burns
- Severe headaches, dizziness, confusion or seizures
- Suspected poisoning or drug/alcohol overdose
- Uncontrolled nausea or diarrhea
You can visit an urgent care for minor conditions, such as:
- Bites, stings, hives and rashes
- Colds, flus, earaches, sore throats and fevers
- Cuts and scrapes that may need stitches
- Minor bone and joint injuries
- Seasonal allergies
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- Sprains and strains
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
