Rehabilitation hospitals

St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital, located at St. David’s Medical Center, is a 64-bed hospital that features private rooms, state-of-the-art technology and the largest rehab pool in the market to support the most comprehensive aquatic therapy program in the region. It also features three satellite facilities located at St. David's North Austin Medical Center, St. David's Round Rock Medical Center and St. David's Georgetown Hospital. All St. David’s Rehabilitation facilities provide comprehensive rehabilitative care for patients with neurological conditions, including stroke, and orthopedic illnesses or injuries.

Inpatient therapy sessions

We use state-of-the-art rehabilitative equipment and evidence-based treatment to help maximize your independence and improve your quality of life. Our patients actively participate in a minimum of three hours of therapy per day, five days per week, or the equivalent. One-on-one therapy sessions address your individual needs to improve:

Inpatient medical care

Our board-certified physicians are on-site daily to care for patients participating in inpatient rehabilitation. Each of our inpatient rehabilitation facilities is located adjacent to a major medical center, meaning we have immediate access to medical specialists and a higher level of care, when needed.

Strokes and stroke rehabilitation

A stroke, or cerebrovascular accident, occurs when there is an interruption in blood flow to the brain, causing damage to the tissue. As a result, many patients experience neurological deficits following a stroke.

Young stroke rehabilitation program

In addition to our comprehensive stroke rehabilitation program, we offer the Young Stroke Program. This is the only evidence-based program of its kind in Central Texas. It addresses the unique challenges and goals of young stroke survivors.

This program includes all components of our traditional program as well as the broader aspects of active adult life. This can include working, driving, parenting and community involvement. The goal of our program is to help you maximize independence and return to a productive and engaged lifestyle.

Amputee Rehabilitation Program

Amputation can result from many conditions, including trauma, vascular disease, coagulation disorders and diabetes. In these cases, we take a phased approach to rehabilitation. This allows us to follow you from initial amputation through the healing process and prosthetic training.

The St. David's amputee rehabilitation program is led by our medical director who is the only board-certified amputee medicine physician in Central Texas. Our amputation rehabilitation program is composed of two phases:

Phase one — postoperative/pre-prosthetic training

This first phase is focused on helping you adapt to initial changes through wound care, mobility training and psychology services. We also provide comprehensive nursing care to help you in the healing process. During this phase, you can expect:

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Rehabilitation Program

SCI can be a result of a traumatic or non-traumatic injury and can result in loss of strength, sensation and function. Regardless of the cause, St. David's Rehabilitation Hospital offers a highly-specialized program to help SCI survivors maximize neurological recovery, optimize medical management and improve functional independence to enhance quality of life.

St. David's spinal cord injury rehabilitation program offers state-of-the-art equipment and technology as well as highly trained and experienced staff. We help individuals regain sensory and motor function, while also focusing on teaching them to be as independent as possible with everyday tasks such as mobility, dressing and bathing.

The program and team are led by our medical director who is the only fellowship-trained and board-certified spinal cord injury medicine physician in Central Texas. He is highly skilled in proper management of SCI-related issues including spasticity, wounds, pulmonary complications and bowel and bladder dysfunction. He also manages and utilizes treatment modalities including baclofen pumps and botulinum toxin injections.

Rehabilitation support groups

The Central Austin Stroke Support Group meets monthly at St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital, bringing opportunities for socialization, support, and learning about stroke and stroke recovery. We also have opportunities for “veteran” stroke survivors to mentor more recent stroke survivors. Stroke survivors, their families, friends and caregivers are welcome. A Zoom option is also available.

The Spinal Cord Injury Peer Support Group of Austin was founded in 2010 and meets once a month at St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital. The group is open to the community and is designed to provide support, information and education to those living with SCI and their loved ones.

The Central Austin Brain Injury Support Group meets monthly at St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital and is open to the community. This group is designed to provide support to individuals living with brain injury, as well as their caregivers.

The Austin Amputee Support Group was founded in 1990 and meets once a month at St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital.  The group is open to the community and is active in community events, social activities and a peer visiting program.

The Still Standing Amputee Support Group meets monthly at St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center and is open to the community. The group is committed to empowering amputees through peer support, education, encouragement and motivation.

Outpatient rehabilitation

In addition to inpatient care, we offer a variety of outpatient rehabilitation services. Outpatient rehabilitation provides patients access to high-quality care while still having the ability to resume their daily activities. Patients are usually referred to outpatient rehabilitation when inpatient rehabilitation is no longer necessary, or was not required initially.
