Austin, TX — With the school year right around the corner, St. David’s CareNow® Urgent Care is offering families with student athletes $20 sports physicals at 15 locations in the Austin area. The physicals are available for students in grades K-12, and families can take advantage of this offer through Aug. 31.

Sports physicals are often required for school-related sports, so it’s important to check with school coaches for sports pre-participation requirements.

“While it’s not required at all school districts, parents should still get their kids examined to ensure safe participation,” Dr. David Wasserman, market medical director of St. David’s CareNow, said. “Having your child examined before returning to school sports plays an important part in identifying underlying health conditions that may interfere with the ability to play safely.”

All students under the age of 18 who receive a sports physical from St. David’s CareNow must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Additionally, students should bring:

  • All necessary forms to the appointment
  • Any medications the student takes regularly
  • Glasses or contacts (if worn)

The most common injuries in youth sports are sprains, strains, bruises, growth plate injuries, repetition motion injuries and heat-related illness. In addition to getting a physical, doctors recommend the following in order to prevent injuries:

  • Maintain a healthy diet
  • Exercise regularly
  • Stay hydrated
  • Don’t encourage “playing through the pain”
