WHAT:

The Kidney Transplant Center at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center will celebrate living kidney donors in honor of Donate Life Month. During the celebration, District 7 Council Member Leslie Pool will read a proclamation declaring April 10 as “Austin’s Living Kidney Donor Day” in an effort to raise awareness of living kidney donation.

According to the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance, over 10,000 people are waiting for a kidney transplant in Texas. Data from the National Kidney Registry indicates the wait for a deceased donor can range anywhere from 3 to 10 years for a kidney. Patients who receive a kidney from a living donor may not have to wait as long, which can help to avoid dialysis.

The event will include remarks from Dr. Koushik Shaw, a urology specialist and living donor surgeon for the National Kidney Registry at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, as well as Texas Organ Sharing Alliance and Donate Life Texas.
