St. David’s HealthCare physicians help advance the latest in surgical robotics, minimally invasive surgical procedures, and other surgical technologies.
Robotics & Endoscopy
St. David’s HealthCare uses the most advanced robotics and endoscopic navigation systems, devices and tools to improve surgical outcomes. Research registries include safety, outcome and efficacy data across multiple St. David’s hospitals, service areas, as well as, with The Texas Institute for Robotics Surgery (TIRS) at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center. Major industry partners collaborate with St. David’s research on registries and prospective studies for brain, spine, orthopedic, bariatric, colo-rectal, gastro, cardiovascular, women’s health, and neonatal. As an example, some studies are on biomedical device technology while other research studies are light-based therapies and new advanced procedures, and yet others are around biomarker imaging.
Biomedical Device Technology
Biomedical device technology research focuses on the design and implementation of innovative surgical devices that improve upon the technology used in surgeries. St. David’s Neuroscience & Spine Institute and The University of Texas at Austin, along with other university researchers, together conduct collaborative research.
Surgical Site Infections (SSIs)
Surgical Site Infections (SSIs) are a significant concern worldwide. SSIs caused by S. aureus account for about 20 percent of all SSIs in the United States. S. aureus is a challenging pathogen, with many factors that enable host immune evasion and resistance to antibiotics. Our SSI research continues to be done at St. David’s Medical Center, St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, and St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center, which could lead to safer surgeries around the world.
