Pediatric Program to Feature Emergency, Inpatient and Intensive Care Services
AUSTIN, TX—St. David’s HealthCare announced today that it will launch a pediatric program at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center located at 12221 North Mopac Expressway. St. David’s HealthCare’s pediatric program will provide emergency, inpatient and intensive care services for children.
St. David’s HealthCare’s pediatric program will open as a separate, dedicated 10-bed emergency department, an 8-bed medical surgical inpatient unit and a 6-bed pediatric intensive care unit. It will be staffed by pediatric physicians, including pediatric hospitalists, intensivists and other specialties, as well as nurses and a number of ancillary staff specially trained to care for children.
“As the population of the greater Austin area continues to expand to the north, the need for pediatric services in the area grows with it,” David Huffstutler, president and chief executive officer of St. David's HealthCare, said. “We are responding to this need by providing families in this area with access to pediatric services closer to home.”
Since 1995, more than 50,000 babies have been born at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, alone. The facility opened St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas in 2008, and it has already undergone an expansion due to increasing community need.
A significant number of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) graduates born—newborns initially requiring a higher level of care who transition out of the hospital care setting—are admitted to other local hospitals for various seasonal conditions such as Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). The pediatric program within St. David’s HealthCare will allow St. David’s HealthCare to provide the services these children need, and it will allow them to stay within the healthcare system their parents choose.
“As a hospital that promotes the health and well-being of women and their newborn babies at St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas, it makes sense to offer families a continuum of pediatric hospital services,” Allen Harrison, chief executive officer of St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, said. “With the launch of this new program, we are offering a choice to many who have expressed a desire to receive care for their children at a St. David’s HealthCare hospital, including parents of babies born here.”
St. David’s HealthCare is making an initial capital investment of approximately $16 million for the pediatric program at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center. St. David’s HealthCare’s pediatric program is scheduled to open in December 2014.
