AUSTIN, TEXAS—St. David’s HealthCare facilities recently ranked among the top hospitals in the nation via the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid’s (CMS) Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating system. As a healthcare consumer tool, the Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating summarizes data from existing measures to allow its users to easily compare hospital facilities by using a star rating for each hospital. The rating shows how well each hospital performed, on average, compared to other hospitals in the United States. The overall rating ranges from one to five stars. The more stars, the better a hospital performed on the available quality measures.
St. David’s Medical Center, which includes St. David’s Georgetown Hospital and Heart Hospital of Austin, as well as St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center earned five-star ratings.
“These ratings provide key information about the quality and safety of care, and they allow patients to make educated decisions when choosing a hospital or healthcare provider,” Ken Mitchell, M.D., chief medical officer at St. David’s HealthCare, said. “This distinction is a direct reflection of the dedication of our hospital staff. It underscores our commitment to providing safe and effective medical care to our patients while achieving exceptional outcomes through evidence-based care processes.”
The Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating was recently revised to use an enhanced methodology to assign ratings to hospitals, based on technical expert panel recommendations and public input.
The overall rating includes 57 of the more than 100 quality measures reported on Hospital Compare, divided into seven measure groups or categories, which include mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care, efficient use of medical imaging and unplanned hospital visits.
Hospitals report data to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the federal agency that runs the Medicare program, through the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program and the Hospital Outpatient Quality Reporting Program.
