AUSTIN, Texas—All eligible St. David’s HealthCare facilities were recently honored with an “A” for patient safety, ranking them among the safest hospitals in the U.S. according to The Leapfrog Group, a national patient safety watchdog. The new Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades assign grades of “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” and “F” to hospitals nationwide and provide the most complete picture of patient safety in the U.S. St. David’s HealthCare is the only hospital system in Central Texas to receive the top rating at all eligible facilities.
St. David’s Medical Center, St. David’s North Austin Medical Center and St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, as well as St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center and St. David’s Georgetown Hospital received an “A” rating. Heart Hospital of Austin’s data were not included in the study completed by The Leapfrog Group because it is considered a specialty hospital.* These St. David’s HealthCare facilities were among 844 hospitals, nationwide, to receive an “A” ranking. St. David’s Medical Center and St. David’s Georgetown Hospital have both received straight “A” ratings since The Leapfrog Group launched the Hospital Safety ScoreSM initiative.
“We are pleased to be recognized for our efforts to provide patients with the highest-quality care,” David Huffstutler, president and chief executive officer of St. David’s HealthCare, said. “This distinction is a testament to our doctors’, nurses’ and staff members’ commitment to creating a safe healthcare environment.”
Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” and “F” grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is calculated by top patient safety experts, peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
“Protecting patients from harm is the most important charge for any hospital,” Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, said. “We recognize and appreciate ‘A’ hospitals’ vigilance and continued dedication to keeping their patients safe.”
