EOS Orthopedic and Spine Imaging System Enables
Accurate Diagnosis and Patient-Specific Treatment
AUSTIN, Texas—On June 20, 2017, St. David’s Medical Center became the first facility in the Austin area to add the EOS® Imaging System—the first technology capable of providing full-body, 2-D and 3-D images of patients in a standing position at a low dose of radiation—to its outpatient imaging services.
The EOS® system offers 50 to 85 percent less radiation than traditional X-ray systems and 95 percent less radiation than basic CT scans, in accordance with the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle for minimizing a patient’s exposure to radiation.
EOS is an innovative 2-D/3-D imaging system dedicated to adult and pediatric orthopedics and osteoarticular pathologies, including those involving the hips,
“We are very excited to bring this innovative technology to our patients, as it represents a true breakthrough in orthopedic and neurosurgical imaging by offering high-quality imaging with only a low dose of radiation,” Kurt W. Von Rueden, M.D., a scoliosis and spinal deformity specialist who practices at St. David’s Medical Center, said. “The full body, weight-bearing images and 3-D models improve the level of orthopedic and neurosurgical care we’re able to provide.”
EOS uses two perpendicular X-rays beams that travel vertically while scanning the patient from head to toe to capture biplanar images. In less than 20 seconds, the EOS exam produces simultaneous frontal and lateral, low-dose images. The two resulting digital images are processed by EOS’ proprietary sterEOS® software to generate a 3-D model of the patient’s entire skeleton (or part of the body, such as the spine or lower limbs).
“These images provide highly detailed information about a patient’s individual anatomy, allowing us to plan patient-specific treatments,” Marcella Madera, M.D., a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon specializing in minimally invasive and complex spinal surgery who practices at St. David’s Medical Center, said. “This technology will be extremely beneficial for many of our spine patients, including those with complex conditions and scoliosis.”
An EOS full body exam takes less than 20 seconds for an adult and less than 15 seconds for a child.
