St. David’s Georgetown Hospital’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Department celebrates its 10th anniversary. The hospital is one of the only providers of inpatient rehabilitation services in Williamson County, with 50 to 60 percent of admissions coming from outside the facility.

After pursuing this distinction for more than a year, St. David’s Medical Center recently received a one-year provisional Accreditation for Adult Transthoracic Echocardiography from the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL). Accreditation status signifies that St. David’s Medical Center has been reviewed by an independent agency which recognizes the laboratory’s commitment to quality testing for the diagnosis of heart disease.

Last January, St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center announced the formation of the hospital’s SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Program. This month, St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center reflects on the program’s importance, due in part to the hospital’s treatment of 38 out of approximately 110 cases in Williamson County since the program’s inception.

St. David’s Medical Center is encouraging patients to continue with cardiac rehabilitation following a heart attack or bypass operations. A recent study reveals people who complete cardiac rehabilitation are less likely to have another heart attack within the next few years than patients who complete fewer sessions. The study, led by Duke University scientists, was published in Circulation, a publication distributed by the American Heart Association.

St. David’s South Austin Hospital today announced a $72-million capital investment for a renovation and expansion project to begin in April 2010. The expansion will increase the hospital by three floors, more than 100,000 square feet and 25 percent more beds.

St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center extended its services, beginning this week, to include trauma services with the capability to provide care for all levels of trauma patients, including the most severely injured and critical patients. During the past year, St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center has recruited highly trained and experienced trauma staff, joining a medical team already providing complex medical services, in preparation of this trauma service expansion.

At 12:53 a.m. on January 1, 2010, doctors at St. David’s Medical Center delivered the first Central Texas baby born in 2010. Avery Blair Smith, born to Kristina and Michael Smith, weighs 5 pounds, 15 ounces, and is 19 1/2 inches long.

St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center opened its first urgent care clinic on Tuesday, December 15, 2009, to treat patients with non-emergent conditions. St. David’s Urgent Care Round Rock includes a six-room clinic with X-ray equipment and a lab. Physicians and staff at the new clinic provide care for patients during standard business hours, after hours and on the weekends without the wait of a hospital emergency room.

NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare today announced the names of two undergraduate biomedical engineering students from The University of Texas at Austin who were chosen to participate in its newly-developed internship program. Jonathan Berezin and Renee Keller will take part in the interactive learning venture, with access to physicians, the operating room and all of the technology available at St. David’s Medical Center, beginning in late December.
