St. David’s Medical Center, Including Heart Hospital of Austin, Named Among Nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals® By Truven Health Analytics

St. David's HealthCare November 14, 2016

AUSTIN, Texas—In November 2016, St. David’s Medical Center, including Heart Hospital of Austin, was named among the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals® by Truven Health Analytics™, an IBM company. St. David’s Medical Center, including Heart Hospital of Austin, is one of three Texas hospitals to earn this designation and the only hospital in Austin to be recognized this year. This designation is especially significant because 35 of the top 50 designations are allocated for teaching hospitals, with only 15 remaining for non-teaching hospitals.

This is the fourth year the combined hospital campuses have earned this distinction. Prior to being consolidated under St. David’s Medical Center, Heart Hospital of Austin was recognized with this honor six times.

The Truven Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals  study measures performance in key areas, including risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures (a group of measures that assess process of care), percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, 30-day mortality rates, 30-day readmission rates, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost. The study has been conducted annually since 1999.

“We are honored to be recognized with this distinction once again,” David Huffstutler, chief executive officer of St. David’s HealthCare, said. “This accolade is a reflection of our commitment to providing our patients with the highest level of cardiovascular care.”

For the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study, Truven Health researchers analyzed 2013 and 2015 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data, 2015 Medicare cost reports, and second quarter 2016 Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare data.

The study—and subsequent analysis of the positive variances these leading cardiovascular service hospitals show—indicate an opportunity for a broader national impact for cardiovascular patients, should these results be replicated. In fact, if all cardiovascular providers in the U.S. performed at the level of this year’s winners:

  • More than 9,000 additional lives could be saved
  • Nearly 6,000 more heart patients could be complication-free
  • More than $1.4 billion could be saved

50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals Report and the 100 Top Hospitals Program

The 100 Top Hospitals program was initiated in 1993. It uses independent and objective research to guide hospital and health system performance. Organizations do not apply or pay for this honor, or pay to promote their award. Award-winning hospitals and health systems prove that better care is possible and provide an example for other organizations to follow across the industry. The 100 Top Hospitals award winners demonstrate top performance on both how patients are cared for through clinical measures and how the hospital performs as an efficient business. The 100 Top Hospitals report is published annually in March and is available at 100TopHospitals.com. The 100 Top Hospitals report can be acquired in combination with the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals report and may also be customized to reflect a hospital’s specific, criteria-by-criteria measurement as compared to 100 Top Hospitals annual winners.
