AUSTIN, TX — St. David’s North Austin Medical Center has named Brian Skrainka, M.D., as medical director of the pediatric emergency department (ED) at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center. In this role, Dr. Skrainka will oversee the emergency medical operations of St. David’s HealthCare’s pediatric program.

“We are confident that Dr. Skrainka will play a key role in the growth of our new pediatric program,” Allen Harrison, chief executive officer of St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, said. “His extensive background in providing emergency medical care to children makes him well qualified to lead this program, allowing us to meet the needs of people living in Austin and in the surrounding communities.”

Dr. Skrainka has nearly 30 years of experience in pediatrics. Most recently, he served as a pediatric emergency medicine physician and assistant professor at the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis. Prior to this role, Dr. Skrainka served as the program director of pediatric hospitalists at Children’s Medical Center at Legacy in Plano, Texas. He was also the medical director of pediatric inpatient services for Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano. During his tenure, he served as president of the Pediatric Hospital Physicians of North Texas.

In addition to being board certified in pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine, Dr. Skrainka is certified in advanced trauma life support by the American College of Surgeons. He is also certified in basic life support and pediatric advanced life support.

Dr. Skrainka graduated cum laude from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He attended medical school at the University of Missouri School of Medicine and completed his residency at Texas Children’s Hospital as part of the Baylor Pediatric Residency Program in Houston, Texas.

St. David’s HealthCare’s pediatric program at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center will open as a separate, dedicated 10-bed emergency department, an 8-bed medical surgical inpatient unit and a 6-bed pediatric intensive care unit in December 2014. It will be staffed by pediatric physicians, including pediatric hospitalists, intensivists and other specialties, as well as nurses and a number of ancillary staff specially trained to care for children.
